Masks
This is a personal piece on the subject of identity and persona. I'm going to use it for the cover of this book of advice I've been writing to myself. The draftsmanship needs work, but I'm looking forward to creating more work. It's been a while since I graduated from school and it's time to take art seriously again.
With the aid of my sister's airbook with photobooth, I drew some misshapen self portraits.
Some subway stuff. Haven't been drawing very much lately. Probably will not be able to do Sketchbook month. I need to find the joy in drawing again.
I need to stop caring what people think. Or should I? I really don't know the answer to that one.

Yes, you should stop caring what other people think. But it's likely that your ego is too fragile to handle that way of life. Most people can't do it, particularly the average artist-type. They always need attention in one form or another.
hey m,
i always like those subway drawings you do. what's up with the solar system?
should just go for it, what is stopping you?

Louis: Thanks for the link - Chuck Close is very inspirational. I remember discovering him around 13 and I then liked the photorealist work more than the "grid" work - but at that time everything I liked was photorealist.
theory_of_me: I suppose opinions are relative and therefore so is the "truth". I feel it's necessary for outside input in order not to have a warped opinion of oneself, but I also feel that too much reliance on outside opinions also leads to a warped opinion of one's self.
I also think it's normal for humans to require attention as social creatures, but I would rather not require it.
Rendez: I think "attempts" is the key word - any suggestions?
Vincent: The observational stuff always tends to have more strength than the made up stuff - which is something I really want to work on. Any tips?
S and Ako: Thanks!

You can get attention without requiring it. That's the best kind of attention to get, actually. Unfortunately, most artists seem to require it for a large part of their motivation. When I try to think about artists that don't care about ego-gratifying attention all I can come up with are a few outsider or "insane" artists. Their work is usually very weird and interesting; definitely not commercial art. Although, commercial art has adopted a few outsider sensibilities lately, it's instantly recognizable (to me) as bastardizations of genuine weirdness.
I agree that reliance on outside opinions can only lead to a warped personality. However, I don't see how you can ever have a total reliance on outside opinion. Even if you decide that other peoples' opinions are more dependable than yours, the primary source of this preference is still your own personal judgment. You are always the sole authority in your life. Trying to convince yourself that this isn't so is passing the buck and preferring to live in a delusional state.
